Help someone has cloned my plate19-Feb-2025

A woman whose car number plates were cloned has spoken of her nightmare – saying she doesn't know when another fine will be posted through her door

Leanne Sheehy, from Swinton, first realised something was wrong when she received a £100 parking penalty from Euro Car Parks last month.

The 33-year-old initially assumed she had made a mistake. However, she soon realised she had never even been to the location in question, which was a pub car park in Cheshire.

The fitness instructor says she reached out to Cheshire Police who were allegedly unable to give out a crime reference number due to a lack of photographic evidence of the vehicle.

Thankfully, Leanne was able to appeal her parking fine when she sent evidence of her correspondence with the police to Euro Car Parks.

However, her ordeal was far from over – with another letter arriving just a week later.

This time, the penalty came from Shell, the company alleging she had driven away from a garage on Kingsway in south Manchester without paying.

They ordered her to pay the £40 worth of fuel along with an additional £30 admin fee.

It was at this point that Leanne realised she must have fallen victim to car cloning, a type of vehicle identity theft.

The crime sees crooks steal or copy another car's registration plates, often choosing plates from a vehicle that looks similar to theirs.
