Shock £195 DVLA letter coming for tens of thousands of drivers12-Mar-2025

Iconic car driven by thousands in UK could 'go extinct' after being 'taken for granted'

Tens of thousands of drivers face being caught out by shock DVLA letters demanding a £195 payment.

Owners of electric cars will have to pay vehicle tax for the first time from April under major changes to the tax system.

Research suggests nearly half of EV owners may be unaware of the fast-approaching changes and are set for a nasty shock when they are sent a tax form telling them to pay up.

They could also miss the chance to delay their first tax payments until next year.

By taxing their cars before April - which currently costs nothing - EV owners can put off paying for 12 months when their tax is next up for renewal.

Motoring experts fear the lack of awareness about tax changes for electric cars will lead to many drivers being caught out.

Jonathan Such, from finance provider First Response Finance, said: "Until now, one of the biggest benefits of owning an electric vehicle has been the financial incentives, particularly VED exemption.

"However, from April 2025, EV drivers will be required to pay car tax just like petrol and diesel drivers, which is typically around £195 per year.
